Chapter 2

Chopin blared at six a.m.

Reese smacked the phone’s alarm. It wouldn’t hush.

Swipe, Reese—don’t slap.

Rubbing her swollen eyes, she stepped over the wad of tissues on the floor and splashed her face with cold water. If Grand knew she was crying over him, over Jett, he’d tell her to cheer up and find the positive note. Positive note: I made it through my therapy session yesterday.

Grand had a strong spirit. Even after Jett’s passing, he kept his faith.

Reese shuffled down the wooden stairs to pour herself a cup of coffee. She peeled back the sticky plastic wrap hugging Miss Lila’s leftover peach pie from the night before. Running her pinky finger through the gooey center, she licked the cinnamon-infused dessert, thankful for new mornings.

Reese shuffled outside, coffee in tow. Even among pain and questions, miracles existed—right? She always thought the birds proved it. No matter the storms, they still spread their wings. Eventually. Did they wait until the storm passed to fly?

Wings.

If Reese had wings they’d be tattered for sure.

No flying for me.

She longed for inner peace, which meant she needed predictable and steady—right? Her family didn’t think so, but she wasn’t built like them. She was just fine in her one-stoplight town.

But am I fine?

She shuffled onto the front porch with her morning essentials and glanced over her daily list.
